ABLUTION

a washing or cleansing of the body, especially as part of a religious rite; the liquid so used

this project was an exercise in double information, or perhaps a cleansing of the singular.  the first word, ABLUTION, along with its definition, appear on the first page acting as both the word's entry and the dictionary's title (hinting at the spirit of the endeavor).  the first and last words on a spread, instead of being repeated a second time as headings, are merely bolded - serving both purposes.  This doubling is allowed by the fact that the size of typeface used for the individual words is twice that used for their definitions, which also responds to the order in which the text is searched, creating a hierarchy for the eye.  Finally, the construction of the book required pages to be cut from a larger piece of paper.  This was facilitated by light bands of gray which mark the limits of the spread and also provide a location for the relative page number to be absorbed.
